I built my first wooden ship model, the Cutty Sark, in 1972. As a professional wood worker, I had an interest in sailing ships. In recent years I started building the ships from the Patrick O’Brian books, and include details from the books. I add imperfections and wear to make the ships look like they have sailed around the world a couple of times. They are miniatures of the vessels they represent, having barrels and buckets here and there on the deck and planking worn with use. The finished ships are mounted on custom-made stands that allow viewing from all sides.
